Sopuck Selected for Two House of Commons Standing Committees
Ottawa—Robert Sopuck, MP for Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette has been selected to serve on the Standing Committee for the Environment and Sustainable Development as well as the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.
“It is truly an honour to serve on these important committees,” said Sopuck “Environmental and fisheries policies can have great impacts on the rural economy and rural communities. We must craft policies that encourage the growth and development of the rural economy while ensuring the conservation of our natural resources.”
Robert Sopuck has extensive experience in the environmental field as a consultant and fisheries biologist. He has served on the National Round table for the Environment and Economy; and was a natural resources advisor to the Filmon government. Sopuck graduated with a Masters from Cornell University in Ithaca New York and received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Manitoba. Sopuck has also farmed and worked in both the forestry and oil and gas sectors.
“It will be a pleasure to bring my past experiences working in government and as a natural resources advisor to the committee on behalf of rural Canadians and landowners who are often the most effected by government environmental policies,” said Sopuck.
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development is a permanent committee established by the Standing Orders of the House. The Committee studies and reports on matters referred to it by the House of Commons, including legislation, departmental activities and spending.
The issues studied by the Fisheries and Oceans Committee parallels the mandate of the department assigned to it, namely, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). Besides DFO, various independent agencies are also assigned to the Committee including Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation located in Manitoba.
